Nau mai ki Te Aranga

Welcome to the Easter season, where we reflect on the scowl of a vicious humanity thrown upon a hamstrung Creator; the Eternal Consciousness encased in a body bent to Palestine dust, as leather and bone whip bareback flesh; as nails and hammer pierce innocent skin to the disgust of a sacred tree forced to resemble Roman torture. Robed in mockery and insult by the adrenaline of religious correctness, Jesus–Creator was abused and killed by the best and worst of us, his most cherished creation: weak-willed humans.

Name the worst we can throw at anyone or anything, and Creator knows it intimately. The work of God is not of vengeance, but the work of justice, of making things whole. At Easter, we honour our Pou, our Rock, our Lord, who points us towards wholeness and hope, to the rising sun of a new day.

“A bruised reed he will not break, and a smouldering wick he will not snuff out. In faithfulness he will bring forth justice”

Happy Easter friends,
Rev Jay Ruka (Dean of Taranaki Cathedral)
